These photographs were taken of a family on the poverty level in the Fatih district of İstanbul. Fatih is one of the most conservative Islamic parts of Istanbul. The photographs were shot over the course of two weeks in February of 2011. The family requested that their names be kept anonymous.

It is important to have insight of a particular cultural group in a particular neighborhood, as then it is logical to understand how there are universal human
concerns and needs….whether someone lives in Turkey or in the southern US,
scarce resources are being used to manipulate people into tribal attitudes fostered
by conservative religious leaders and politicians that foster hatred of “the other”.
